Detailed Plot Summary[]
Lucky, a golden Sheltie Retriver, is shown living in an abandoned city after the Big Growl, and is trapped in a longpaw house. He befriends Sweet,a greyhound female who helps set them free, and he leads her to a longpaw food house, where they find a dead longpaw. This scares Sweet, and later goes on a quest to find a new pack, since her old one died in the Big Growl. Lucky refuses to go with her, so he is left behind, where he later meets Old Hunter, his old friend who is also a lone dog. He shares his secret meat stash with him, and Lucky goes on his way out of the abandoned mall. Before he is able to leave, he encounters a group of foxes, who attack him. He meets Sunshine, Daisy, Bruno, Mickey, Martha, and Bella his littermate, Squeak. They lead him to their homes, where they discover that Alfie, a friend of the pet dogs, is trapped in a longpaw home. Lucky rescues him, and after that, they leave the town forming their own pack. Lucky is unsure whether he should stay with the pack and his littermate, or continue life as a lone dog. After a long time of searching for the perfect place to settle, they find a little cove where the hunting is good. During the journey, Lucky had convinced the rest of the dogs to leave behind their longpaw items, which they all agree to except for Mickey, who had a little more trouble, and is the most connected with longpaws than any of the dogs with them. They decide to check out what was behind some hills, and Bella sends out a patrol consisting of herself, Lucky, Daisy, and Mickey. They discover the Fierce dog layer, where they later meet Blade and her pack. Bella, starving, suggested that they should steal their food. Lucky disagrees, and after a long argument, Bella goes in with all the dogs in the patrol except for Lucky. They get caught, and Lucky saves them. Later, they head back to camp, and Lucky announces that he is leaving the pack to go and live his own life as a lone dog once again. He leaves the next morning, but changes his mind when he hears frantic barking coming from the direction of the pack he left, and runs back to help them.
